Kin Croc is the powerful debut album from Kimberley hip-hop artist Gugs Ranye, a raw, self-produced project that tracks his journey as both rapper and storyteller. Blending sharp lyricism with local and international collaborations, the album reflects Ranye’s lived experience as a “middle voice” in a divided world.
Featuring production by iRL and Kontrabandz, Kin Croc is grounded in Ranye’s home towns of Derby and Broome, offering vivid portraits of community, resilience, and cultural memory. From the local nightlife of “Batman” to the ancestral strength of the title track “King Croc,” each song carries the weight of identity, struggle, and survival.
The album opens with “Glow Up,” introducing Ranye’s rhythm and tone, followed by tracks like “Make No Mistake,” which captures the pressure of working-class life, and “Batch of Bangers,” a defiant anthem rooted in Derby pride. On “The Drifter,” collaborators iRL and ThaDollex help create an alternative soundscape that speaks to movement, unity, and class tension.
“1000 Times” honours the influence of matriarchal strength in Ranye’s family and culture, a thread that runs deeply throughout the album. The closing track, “King Croc,” is a spiritual and emotional reflection on Ranye’s own story, guided by the dreaming and symbolism of the crocodile, a metaphor for resilience and transformation.
“Kin Croc is named after the song ‘Kin Croc’ and the cover art, which includes my siblings and myself,” says Gugs Ranye
“It also speaks of the influence of our mother on our lives, as told in ‘1000 Times'."
Gugs Ranye (Gugs for short, from Gugga) is an independent artist who writes, produces, mixes, and performs his own music. Gugga, meaning “uncle” in Nyikina, reflects his cultural roots. Hailing from Derby in the northwest of Australia, Gugs’ sound spans from backstreet boom bap to country folklore, with grainy, conscious rap that carries meaning and purpose.
He aims to inspire young people in his hometown to pursue music as a form of creative expression and to help put Derby, also known as “Blood City” on the map.
Kin Croc is available now on all major streaming platforms
